My science background and main area of interest is the brain – I have a BSc in Cognitive Science and an MSc in Neuroscience, and continued to work in a neuroscience lab for a further two years, specialising in cognitive neuroscience relating to ageing and dementia.
I also wrote, edited (including a period as co-editor in chief) and copy-edited the Edinburgh University Science (EUSci) magazine, and was a founding member of the EUSci podcast team. This experience convinced me that my passion was for communicating about all things science rather than working in the lab, and that’s the direction that I moved in.
My formal employment as a science communicator has been with charities; I worked for Alzheimer’s Society as Research Communications Officer for nearly four years, utilising my knowledge and experience of dementia research, and then moved on to Asthma UK as Research Communications Manager to further build my communications and marketing experience.
I am now working as a freelance writer, editor and communications specialist, with the aim of bringing amazing science to life in a way that people can connect with.
